You may remember that back in November, our Blog reviewed physical trackers that could be placed on your luggage. In a related update, suitcase manufacturer Rimowa has taken the next step to reduce travel time by implementing an electronic bag-tag as a feature in their custom suitcases. These digital bag-tags use an app (with Bluetooth) to transmit passenger boarding information from the traveler’s phone to an electronic data display built into the luggage. Replacing the traditional paper tags, a window on the suitcase will display your departure/arrival airports, barcodes, and other details that typically appeared on the former tags. Having these electronic bag-tags allow passengers to skip the initial check-in process and drop their bags off at an automated station.
Rimowa states that “Using this new technology, travelers will be able to check-in their luggage from home using their smartphone and drop it off at the airport in seconds – without all the stress and time pressure.”
Although you’d no longer need to check your bag(s), you’d still need to check in for your flight. As of now, Rimowa has a partnership with Lufthansa and United Airlines, and is currently testing the system. You will still be responsible for any applicable airline baggage fees. The digital bag-tag also features a bag-tracking mechanism, which will alert you when your bag has been stored safely and securely on the plane.
Pricing for these digital suitcases range from $500 to $1,300 depending on size and style, and includes a five-year warranty. Rimowa believes these suitcases will be available stateside this summer. To find out more, go to www.Rimowa-ElectronicTag.com.
